What You Get

What the $125 comprehensive exam includes

This isn't a quick refraction at a kiosk. It's a complete evaluation of both your vision and your eye health with Dr. Patel. One flat price, everything below included.

Optional add-ons like optomap imaging ($39) or the dry eye workup ($50) are always your choice. We'll recommend them when they make clinical sense, and skip them when they don't.

Included in every exam

  • Your history & concerns. Symptoms, screen habits, family eye history, and what you want from your vision.
  • Vision testing & refraction. Your precise glasses prescription, checked for real-world use, not just the eye chart.
  • Slit-lamp health exam. A microscope-level look at your lids, cornea, and lens, where dry eye and cataracts show up first.
  • Eye pressure check. Glaucoma screening at every visit.
  • Retinal health evaluation. With dilation when clinically indicated, and both dilation and optomap at every diabetic exam.
  • A clear plan. Your prescription, findings explained in plain language, and next steps if anything needs attention.

Vision insurance vs. medical insurance

The single most confusing thing about eye care costs is that two different kinds of insurance can apply, depending on why you're being seen. Here's the difference in plain terms:

Vision insurance

Covers routine care: your yearly comprehensive exam (usually just a copay) plus allowances toward glasses or contact lenses. We work with vision plans including VSP and EyeMed. If you have one, your exam will likely cost less than the $125 cash price.

Medical insurance

Covers eye problems: dry eye visits, infections, styes, floaters, injuries, and diabetic eye care, billed like any other medical visit, subject to your copay and deductible. We accept Medicare and most major medical plans.

Not sure which applies to you? Call (617) 965-2540 before your visit. We'll check your benefits and tell you what to expect before you're charged. No surprise bills.

Ways to pay

Whether or not insurance applies, you've got options.

HSA & FSA

Exams, contact lens fittings, and cash-pay treatments like IPL and NuLids are generally HSA/FSA-eligible, so you can pay with pre-tax dollars.

CareCredit & cards

CareCredit financing is available for larger treatment plans, and we take cash and all major credit cards.

Insurance verification

Call before your appointment and we'll verify your vision or medical benefits so you know your cost walking in.

Pricing Questions

What patients ask most about eye exam and treatment costs.

How much does an eye exam cost without insurance in Newton, MA?

A comprehensive eye exam at Newton Advanced Eye Services is $125 without insurance. That covers the full exam with Dr. Patel: vision testing and your eyeglass prescription, a slit-lamp health check, eye pressure screening for glaucoma, and a retinal health evaluation with dilation when clinically indicated. Optional add-ons like optomap ultra-widefield imaging ($39) are priced separately so you only pay for what you choose.

How much does a contact lens exam cost?

A contact lens exam is the $125 comprehensive exam plus a contact lens evaluation and fitting fee: $95 for new patients or $80 for existing patients, for standard soft lenses. Specialty fittings (RGP, MiSight, or scleral lenses) involve more measurement and follow-up visits, so those are quoted at your consultation. Call (617) 965-2540 if you're not sure which applies to you.

Will my vision insurance cover the eye exam?

Usually, yes. Routine comprehensive exams are the core benefit of vision plans, and most members pay only a copay. We work with vision plans including VSP and EyeMed, plus Medicare and most major medical insurances for medical eye visits. Benefits vary by plan and employer, so call (617) 965-2540 before your appointment and we'll help verify your coverage.

What's the difference between vision insurance and medical insurance for eye care?

Vision insurance (like VSP or EyeMed) covers routine care: the yearly comprehensive exam, plus allowances toward glasses or contacts. Medical insurance (including Medicare) covers eye problems (visits for dry eye, infections, styes, floaters, diabetes-related eye care, or injuries) the same way it covers any other medical condition. If you book a routine exam and we discover a medical issue, the follow-up care is typically billed to your medical insurance. We'll always tell you which applies before you're charged.

How much does dry eye treatment cost?

It starts with a $50 dry eye diagnostic workup that identifies your dry eye type. From there, posted treatment prices are: NuLids PRO in-office treatment $99 per session, and Lumenis OptiLight IPL $250 per session with a typical course of 4 sessions (about $1,000). Both are HSA/FSA eligible. Punctal plugs are often covered by medical insurance when medically necessary, so we quote those after verifying your benefits rather than posting a number.

Is the optomap retinal image covered by insurance?

Optomap ultra-widefield retinal imaging is an optional $39 add-on to your exam and is typically not covered by insurance as a screening. It captures up to 200 degrees of your retina in one scan and gives us a permanent baseline to compare against year over year. Diabetic patients receive both a dilated exam and optomap imaging at every visit.

Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay?

Yes. Eye exams, contact lens fittings, and cash-pay treatments like OptiLight IPL and NuLids PRO are generally HSA/FSA eligible expenses. We also accept CareCredit, cash, and major credit cards. If you're planning a larger treatment course like the 4-session IPL series, an HSA or FSA is an easy way to pay with pre-tax dollars.
