Conditions We Treat
NuLids PRO effectively addresses multiple interconnected eye conditions
Blepharitis
Eyelid inflammation and irritation
What is it?
Chronic inflammation of the eyelids causing redness, irritation, and crusting along the eyelid margins. Often caused by bacterial overgrowth or Demodex mites.
Symptoms
- • Red, swollen eyelids
- • Itchy, burning sensation
- • Crusty debris at lash base
- • Watery or gritty eyes
If Left Untreated
Chronic blepharitis can lead to permanent eyelid changes, eyelash loss (madarosis), recurrent styes, meibomian gland dysfunction, and chronic dry eye. In severe cases, can cause corneal damage and vision loss.
How NuLids PRO Helps
Removes bacterial biofilm and debris from eyelid margins, reduces inflammation, and prevents recurrence through regular maintenance.
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
Blocked oil glands in eyelids
What is it?
Blockage of the meibomian glands that produce the oily layer of tears. These glands can become clogged with thickened secretions, reducing tear quality and stability.
Symptoms
- • Dry, gritty eyes
- • Fluctuating vision
- • Eye discomfort
- • Contact lens intolerance
If Left Untreated
Progressive gland atrophy and permanent loss of function. Can lead to severe chronic dry eye, increased risk of eye infections, and complications with eye surgeries.
How NuLids PRO Helps
Stimulates meibomian glands to express blocked secretions, improves oil flow, and restores healthy tear film composition. Clinical studies of meibomian gland debridement and expression show improved gland function and tear-film stability.1
Demodex Blepharitis
Eyelash mite infestation
What is it?
Infestation of microscopic Demodex mites that live in eyelash follicles and meibomian glands. Affects approximately 25 million Americans and causes over two-thirds of blepharitis cases.
Symptoms
- • Cylindrical dandruff (collarettes) at lash base
- • Intense itching, especially morning
- • Red, irritated eyelids
- • Eyelash loss
If Left Untreated
Progressive chronic inflammation, eyelash loss and thinning, meibomian gland blockage and atrophy, permanent eyelid changes, increased risk of corneal complications that may lead to scarring and vision loss.
How NuLids PRO Helps
Mechanical removal of Demodex mites, eggs, and waste products from eyelid margins. Disrupts mite lifecycle and reduces mite population significantly. This prepares the eyelid to be treated with teatree oil eyelid wipes.
Dry Eye Disease
Insufficient or poor quality tears
What is it?
A chronic condition where eyes don't produce enough tears or tears evaporate too quickly. Often caused by MGD, environmental factors, aging, medications, or underlying health conditions.
Symptoms
- • Stinging or burning sensation
- • Foreign body sensation
- • Light sensitivity
- • Blurred vision
If Left Untreated
Significantly impacts quality of life, increases risk of eye infections, can cause corneal damage and scarring, difficulty with daily activities like reading and driving.
How NuLids PRO Helps
Addresses the root cause by improving meibomian gland function, enhancing tear-film stability, and reducing ocular surface inflammation — improvements demonstrated in peer-reviewed studies.1

Side Effects & When We Postpone Treatment
NuLids PRO is a gentle, non-invasive lid treatment with minimal downsides — most patients return to their day immediately. Still, there are a few things to know, and a few situations where Dr. Patel will treat the underlying issue first.
What You Might Notice
- A gentle tickling sensation — the soft tip oscillates along the lash line during the roughly 2-minute treatment. Most patients describe it as odd for a moment, then comfortable; no numbing is needed.
- Temporary lid redness — the lid margins can look slightly pink for a few hours after the deep clean, similar to skin after gentle exfoliation.
- Brief watering — some eyes tear a little immediately after treatment; this settles quickly on its own.
When We Postpone or Modify Treatment
- Active eye infection or inflammation — conjunctivitis, an active stye, or significant lid swelling is treated first; NuLids follows once the eye has settled.
- Recent eye surgery or injury — treatment is deferred until the eye has healed and, where relevant, your surgeon has cleared routine care.
- Eyelid lesions or fragile lid skin — any growth or unusual spot on the lid margin is evaluated before treatment, and the approach is adjusted around it.
Dr. Patel examines your lids before every session — if anything needs attention first, treatment is simply rescheduled.
Common Questions
What patients ask most about NuLids PRO.
Does NuLids PRO treatment hurt?
No. The device uses a soft, gentle oscillating tip along the lash line, and no numbing is needed. Most patients find the roughly 2-minute treatment comfortable — many describe it as a light tickling sensation.
How much does NuLids PRO cost?
NuLids PRO is $99 per session at our Newton office, and it's HSA/FSA eligible. Call (617) 965-2540 to schedule or ask questions about fitting it into your dry eye treatment plan.
How many NuLids treatments will I need?
It depends on the severity of your blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction. Some patients start with a short series to get buildup under control, then return periodically for maintenance alongside their home lid-hygiene routine. Dr. Patel will recommend a schedule based on how your lids respond.
Is this the same as the at-home NuLids device?
No — NuLids PRO is the professional, in-office version: a stronger, doctor-administered deep clean of the lid margins. The at-home NuLids device is designed for gentle daily maintenance between visits. The two are often used together as part of a complete lid-hygiene plan.
