Revolutionary Dry Eye Care

OptiLight by Lumenis is a groundbreaking light-based treatment that uses precise, intense pulsed light (IPL) to reduce the inflammation that causes dry eye disease.

Dry eye is often a vicious cycle of inflammation. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) causes tear evaporation, which leads to inflammation, which in turn causes further gland damage. OptiLight breaks this cycle.

By treating the skin below the eyes, OptiLight targets the abnormal blood vessels that leak inflammatory mediators, effectively stopping the inflammation at its source.

Advanced Technology

OptiLight in Action

How OptiLight Treats MGD

1

Reduces Inflammation

Light pulses close off abnormal blood vessels (telangiectasia) that release inflammatory markers.

2

Improves Tear Breakup

Restores the function of meibomian glands, allowing them to produce healthy oil for the tear film.

3

Decreases Bacteria

Reduces the population of Demodex mites and bacteria on the eyelids that contribute to irritation.

4

Restores Function

Clinically proven to increase tear breakup time and reduce the severity of dry eye symptoms.

Who Is It For?

OptiLight is designed for patients suffering from chronic dry eye and associated conditions.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

MGD is the leading cause of dry eye. OptiLight is the only FDA-approved device specifically for managing MGD, helping to unclog glands and improve oil flow.

Ocular Rosacea & Blepharitis

Patients with ocular rosacea often suffer from chronic eyelid inflammation (blepharitis). IPL reduces the abnormal blood vessels (telangiectasia) that release inflammatory factors, treating both the skin and the eyes.

Demodex Blepharitis

The light energy helps decrease the population of Demodex mites, which can live in the eyelash follicles and cause persistent inflammation.

Chalazia

IPL can effectively reduce the inflammation associated with chalazia (persistent styes). By breaking up the hardened oil and stimulating drainage, it can expedite healing and prevent recurrence.

Proven Results

Backed by Science

Clinical studies have consistently demonstrated the efficacy of OptiLight IPL in treating the root causes of dry eye disease.

50%+

Symptom Reduction

Patients experienced a significant reduction in SPEED scores (Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness), indicating meaningful relief from daily symptoms.

+93%

Tear Film Stability

Tear Break-Up Time (TBUT) improved by 93% or more at both study sites, meaning the tear film stays intact longer to protect the eye between blinks.

↓ IL-6

Inflammation Control

A significant decrease in inflammatory markers (IL-17 and IL-6) was found in the tear film, proving IPL targets inflammation at the microscopic level.

What to Expect at Your IPL Visit

From your first consultation at our Newton office to lasting relief — here is how the process works.

1

Dry Eye Evaluation

Dr. Patel examines your meibomian glands and tear film, reviews your health history and medications, and confirms IPL is the right treatment for you.

2

Treatment Day

Protective eye shields and cooling gel are applied, then gentle light pulses treat the skin below the eyes. Each session takes about 15 minutes.

3

Right After

No downtime — you can drive home and return to normal activities immediately. Mild redness or warmth may last a few hours; sun protection is recommended between sessions.

4

Your Results

Many patients notice improvement after the second or third session. The full course is 4 sessions, with maintenance every 6-12 months as needed.

Safety, Side Effects & Candidacy

OptiLight has an excellent safety profile — and honest care means knowing who it is, and isn't, right for. Dr. Patel screens every patient before treatment.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are typically mild and short-lived:

  • Temporary redness or a warm, flushed feeling in the treated skin for a few hours
  • Mild light sensitivity on the day of treatment
  • Rarely, temporary skin pigment changes — the reason careful skin-type screening and sun-exposure precautions matter

Who May Need an Alternative

IPL may not be recommended if you have:

  • Recent tanning or significant sun exposure, or very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick types V–VI)
  • Photosensitizing medications such as isotretinoin or doxycycline
  • Pregnancy or nursing
  • An active eye or skin infection, or a history of cold sores (herpes simplex) in the treatment area
  • A history of skin cancer or suspicious lesions in the treatment area

If IPL isn’t right for you, effective alternatives such as NuLids PRO therapy and punctal plugs are available at the same office.
